Join us for "Clean the Peaks" neighbourhood cleanup event on 7 June
FireSmartPeaks, the Peaks of Grassi FireSmart Committee, was established in January 2025 by a group of Peaks' residents as a vehicle for mobilising the broader community to work together to help mitigate the risk and impact of wildland fire in Canmore's Peaks of Grassi neighbourhood.
For many residents of Canmore, the tragic wildland fire that devastated Jasper in July 2024, as well as the long-term social and economic consequences of this, served as a painful and urgent reminder that Canmore is not immune from the risk of wildland fire.
The Town of Canmore is taking important steps towards reducing that risk. These include continuing to undertake "FireSmarting" activities in different areas of the town and, more recently, implementing the Bow Valley Community Fireguard with the Municipal District of Bighorn and Kananaskis Improvement District, and with support from Alberta Forestry and Parks.
The residents and homeowners of Canmore also have a critical role to play in reducing the risk and devastating consequences of wildland fire in and around the town. The Peaks of Grassi is one of several Canmore neighbourhoods that are at the forefront of the wildland urban interface (WUI) -- the area where human development meets or intermingles with the natural environment -- characterised by dense forest and steep slopes.
FireSmartPeaks is working with the Town of Canmore, Canmore Fire Rescue and FireSmart Alberta to empower Peaks' residents to take steps to increase the resilience of their homes, properties and the neighbourhood against the threat of wildland fire.
This includes working towards the FireSmart Neighbourhood Recognition Program, a national program that recognises communities that have taken critical steps to reduce their vulnerability to wildland fire. The program focuses on bringing neighbours together to address threats on their respective properties, and those in common areas within the community. Further information on the Peaks’ Neighbourhood Recognition Program will be provided in the coming weeks.
